The community you want starts at your front door

Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration of community, encouraging people to connect with those who live in their neighbourhood. And if there are two things we do well here on the Gold Coast – it’s celebrate and look after one another.

People make our City great and Neighbour Day is about connecting people, whether through a cuppa, a picnic in the park, or a message of support; Neighbour Day is the perfect opportunity to say thanks for being a great neighbour and for being there when I needed you most.

“I had always wanted to have a great connected neighbourhood but didn’t really know where to start. Neighbour Day gave me ideas, tools and an excuse to get on with it. Most people say they have been meaning to get to know their neighbours, but many don’t get around to it. Neighbour Day gives a time frame and a sense of urgency.” Neighbour Day 2016 host

WHEN?
Neighbour Day is celebrated on the last Sunday in March every year with the aim of fostering strong personal connections that last the whole year round. Every day can be neighbour day.

The theme for Neighbour Day 2017 is: The Importance of Social Connection for the Elderly.

In 2017, Neighbour Day falls on Sunday 26 March.

WHY?
The principal aim of Neighbour Day is to build better relationships with the people who live around us, especially the elderly and vulnerable. Neighbours are important because good relationships with others can and do change communities. Social connection also makes us feel better as it helps prevent loneliness, isolation and depression. Neighbour Day brings together like-minded people, resources, and organisations to grow stronger, well connected communities.
GOLD COAST NEIGHBOUR DAY EVENTS

Neighbour Day events are being hosted across the City and we encourage you to get know your neighbours by holding your own celebration. Your event can be as big or as small as you would like. The City of Gold Coast’s free Meet our Street kit contains everything you need to get started.

Relationships Australia, the national organiser of Neighbour Day, also has a free Resource Kit available which can help you with everything from organising an event to introducing yourself to your street.

On the day make sure you upload your photos to social media with the #ourgoldcoast hashtag!
